WILD AND BROKEN is a new duet by Leah Stein and Toshi Makihara that transcends the boundaries of music and dance by "being-there," standing wild and broken. Leah and Toshi will embrace, in real time, the ripples of over 35 years of collaborative partnership as they continue to embody sound and movement together in performance.
Artistic partnership between Leah Stein and Toshi Makihara began in their first collaborative work performed at Susan Hess Studio in 1988. Since then Toshi and Leah have collaborated in many works including outdoor site-specific pieces and more formal works on stage and numerous impromptu duets. Their collaborations embody sound and movement and environment.
Wild and Broken is dedicated to their friend and collaborator Hideo Arai.
LEAH STEIN
Dancer, choreographer, educator Leah Stein creates collaborative site-specific performance projects including large choral dance works as well as intimate small-scale movement works. An avid improviser, she founded Leah Stein Dance Company in 2001 in Philadelphia where her site-specific dances have been performed throughout the region, nationally and internationally in train garages, open fields, vacant city lots, gardens, burial grounds and numerous historic sites. A 2018 Pew Fellow, Leah has received numerous grants and awards including a 2019 MacDowell Fellowship supporting her ongoing collaborations with composers, musicians and poets. Leah engaged in a yearlong research project with legendary composer Pauline Oliveros to develop Pauline’s Deep Listening practice with singers and dancers. This research is the foundation of Leah’s current teaching, practice and performance. She co-directs the Art Room Studio in South Philly in support of experimental performance works by and for local artists.
TOSHI MAKIHARA
Toshi Makihara studied drums, percussion and improvisation with Sabu Toyozumi, a prominent percussionist in Tokyo. Since arriving in the United States, he has worked with various new music ensembles as well as with numerous dance and theater companies internationally. He has also collaborated with poets, visual artists, filmmakers and performance artists widely. Since the fall of 2000, Makihara has been focusing on three separate performing styles: 1. New Jazz performances on a conventional drum-set, 2. music for theater and dance using a variety of percussion and discovered sound media, and 3. the experimental free improvisation using a simple setting consisting of one snare drum and one small cymbal. Makihara's recordings include Grammy nominated "Another Shining Path" (1998 Drimala Records) in trio with Gary Hassay (alto saxophone) and William Parker (bass), and "Hurricane Floyd" (Spring 2000, Sublingual Records) in trio with Thurston Moore (guitar) and Wally Shoup (alto sax). He received Pew Fellowship in 2013.

Performance takes place outside in the parking lot and on the 2nd floor in The Art Room Studio.

Chairs will be provided at all performance sites.

The Art Room Studio is located in a building with a 4-step stoop and is on the 2nd floor of the building. There is no elevator.

There is a single stall gender neutral bathroom in the basement of the building.

If you are taking public transportation, the studio is close to the 57 bus route, and about a 20 minute walk from the BSL Snyder stop.
