A letter from Leah:
December 2022

I hope this letter finds you well in this time of great change and transformation. I am so humbled and excited to still be making meaningful work together and want to express gratitude to you for your continued support and belief in all our creative projects and programs!
Over the past year, having the time and space to reflect on the needs of our community has helped us transition into a new season of offerings and future visions.

LSDC is focused on the Art Room Studio in South Philadelphia to support local artists in their creative process by offering a range of programs including classes, workshops, informal studio showings and artist residency programs. We’ve also launched a community membership program for artists to have low cost studio access. Lastly, this year we presented our first “Film Works'' series that featured films by Keila Cordova, Jungwoong Kim, and LSDC’s new film.
Our Open Page event in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival was a great success! The event featured Shannon Brooks, Crux, Caitlin Greene with participating emerging artists alongside seasoned collaborators Josie Smith and Toshi Makihara. The showings activated the space and took place throughout the entire building including the Art Room Studio, the basement (transformed!), the stairwell, as well as outdoors, bringing the entire space alive.
Videographer Indi Abbott shared after the event:

“I want to thank you and express how fascinated and moved I was by the performances on Sunday! Thank you so much for letting me witness and take part in the incredible community of artists with whom you are collaborating and exploring with.”

LSDC’s research project “carry with you this place” continues as we delve deeper into our Voice and Movement Deep Listening practice. Guest vocal artist Samita Sinha joined us for a workshop offering her powerful approach to embodying the voice with emphasis on vibration and resonance and shape of sound. Our work with Samita opened new channels to access our voices and expanded our understanding of our practice. We are excited that she will be working with us again in 2023.
Next summer, we are planning a residency in Vermont for an intensive rehearsal period and showing to further our research in voice, movement, sound, image and environment connected to landscape and families of origin. We intend to bring back to Philadelphia to share with you all the fruits of our efforts!

As we look to 2023, I invite you to be a part of our journey! By making a contribution to the life of Leah Stein Dance Company by December 31st, you’re contributing to accomplishing these important goals in 2023 and beyond.
I deeply appreciate your continued support and wish you all the best in the new year.
